It’s just you and me here. Be honest – when was the last time you replaced your oldest underwear? You know, the ones that are all stretched out, have a hole in them and aren't fitting quite like they used to. I’m talking about the trusty pair of underwear that you refuse to part with. Consider this an intervention. You need to start thinking about buying new underwear, even if you don't necessarily need new underwear right now.
If your answer is 2-5 years, we're here to help (not judge…promise). Although underwear is probably the most important tool in your closet, it's usually an afterthought to many people. I mean, they’re the first thing you slip on and the last article of clothing that you take off. An awful pair of underwear can make or break your day. Sure, they may be “holding up”, but you’re probably wearing them way past their expiration date.
Picture this, you’re sitting in your chair and you constantly have to readjust. Every now and then while you’re walking you do that little lunge-step to put everything back into place. You get up out of your chair to find a little puddle where your crack was resting. Man, it’s time to replace your underwear. Read on to find out the tell-tale signs that it’s time to buy new underwear as well as how you can extend the life of your favorite pair.
How Long Should You Keep Underwear?
Now you may be sitting there asking yourself “How often should I buy new underwear? Do I even need new underwear? How I be thinking of buying new underwear?”. As a general rule (and the industry standard), you should refresh your underwear drawer every six months to a year. However, you should also consider how many core pairs and styles you have in your rotation. If you usually buy single pairs throughout the year, just make sure to get rid of older ones as you go. Personally, I shower twice a day (once before work, once after the gym), so I end up going through about two pairs every single day. That’s fourteen pairs a week. But I don’t really like running out of underwear when it’s time to do laundry, so I have double that amount – twenty-eight pairs. That way, when Sunday comes and it’s time to do laundry, I still have a reserve set aside just in case.
Bonus Tip: If you have a favorite pair of underwear, buy several pairs of them. You may feel like it's a bit of an expensive up-front investment, but it'll be worth it when you feel how awesome it is to slip into a comfortable hammock every morning.
How Do I Know When It’s Time to Replace My Underwear?
There’s a couple of tell-tale signs that your undies are well past their expiration date. These are also good indicators for how often your underwear should be replaced. Some of these include stretching, fading and a tired waistband. For example, if you feel like your boxer briefs are shifting around under your clothes and aren’t exactly hugging your legs and man-bits as well as they used to, get rid of them. Also, it goes without saying a hole in your undies means that it’s time to trash them.
A brand new pair of underwear should fit like a glove, not like that an over-sized sweatshirt. Over time, the material can stretch out and wear down, which can get pretty uncomfortable. Overall, if you’re not feeling as comfortable and supported as you once were, it’s time to say goodbye.
How Should I Care For and Wash My Underwear?
Your underwear usually can’t handle the same washer-dryer beat down that your sweaters, pants and shirts can. In general, when it comes to underwear, you want to take it easy on them. For micromodal underwear (the most buttery, breathable, stretchTASTIC underwear), you want to machine wash them in cold water on a gentle cycle, avoid bleach, tumble dry low, dry clean or iron. You don’t want to just throw them in the dryer and not pay attention to the settings – that’s a surefire way to ruin the color and the material.
If you have the time and patience, you can always hand wash them too. That takes the harsh dryer out of the equation and can really prolong your underwear’s life. It may seem a little over-the-top, but it's worth it.
Also, to keep yourself from getting stranded with no comfortable underwear, try to buy a few at a time. We all have that one pair of undies that we really love – next time you go to buy them, buy multiple pairs. It might cost a little bit more up-front, but you'll thank yourself when you always have a reserve of great undies on standby.
For some reason, throwing away old underwear feels a bit wasteful. Even if they’ve been in your rotation for a solid amount of time, it can still be a tough to toss your war-hardened essentials. But once your underwear gets past it’s shelf life, you’re not doing anyone any favors by not trashing them. All in all, we recommend that you should replace your underwear every six months to a year and to buy multiples of your favorite pair so you always have a few spares.
